The City of Largo, Central Park Nature Preserve, hosted the kick off of the 2007 Fishing Tournaments for Special Kids on Saturday, April 7th. A view from atop the Fire Department’s ladder truck shows anglers, parents and volunteers lined along the board-walk surrounding the lake.
It was an unusually chilly morning, at about 7a.m. the thermometer was at 60 degrees but, that didn’t stop our anglers, by 8a.m. 129 kids were ready for an exciting day of fishing and educational projects plus hot off the grill hamburgers & hot dogs, sodas, awards and prizes for everyone. While strolling along the nature walk towards the lake the aroma of hamburgers and hot dogs filled the air. It was “MAD” volunteer chefs experiencing a major flare up by the dripping hamburger juice onto the fire. But, the smell of the cooking hamburgers only made the day a little more special. There’s just something about fishing that makes an angler hungry.
By the time the sun was rising over the lake, bobbers were in the water and anxious eyes staring in hopes to see evidence of a fish nibbling at their bait.
The wet land marsh is approximately 31 acres and is home to over 130 species of birds, otters, red fox, alligators, rabbits, turkeys, turtles and other wildlife according to the parks and recreation guide. Throughout the preserve there are 40 interpretive displays that educate visitors on the wildlife at the park.
Our efforts to organize programs that facilitate the involvement of handicapped kids in marine education and recreation include hands on projects. One art project was “fish rubbing.” The kids play with rubber models of real fresh and salt water fish. They learn their common names, ask questions and then make rubbings by painting one side of the fish then pressing it onto paper. The result is a “fish rubbing” like this saltwater Flounder the kids can take home.
By the end of morning it was time for awards. The kids rushed to the events tent to see who won in various categories; for first fish caught, biggest, smallest, ugliest and so on. In addition to awards all the kids received prizes during a final raffle at the end of the event.
By the end of the tournament over 350 anglers, parents and care givers experienced an event that was fun, educational and a meaningful experience for all our volunteers.
